Cheapest Fabric

We all need a bit of fabric now and then, wether it is a no-sew project, a simple cover for a book, or a full engaging sewing project, fabric is a necessity. In the last several years, sewing your own clothing is not typically cheaper than buying it. I used to be able to find $1 a yard fabric often, but now the clearance fabric rack is $3 and above. Hmmmm....not my kind of price for simple no-sew projects or even making pajamas.

I discovered that I can make a lot of simple projects just using sheets. Second hand stores like Goodwill have twin sheets for $2 a piece, which is over 2 yards of fabric. That is enough to make pajama pants, a swimming over shirt, a skirt, a shirt, or a few aprons. You can find all sorts of practically new sheets at second hand stores in all sorts of prints. I even found some striped sheets to use as pants for a pirate costume. If you find a matching set of a fitted and flat sheet, that is enough to make a dress. Of course, most sheets are a cotton blend. Occasionally you can find rayon, t-shirt, or silk sheets.

Here are a couple of projects we made using sheets:
